Happy/sad
  • Chris is happy to be back!  Went to Rotary Club in Shanghai (brought back a flag) and talked to them about global grants, came back after being away and biked 400 miles
  • Laura thanked everyone who supported the Reality Fair (52 volunteers), great feedback from the event!  Now connected to Department of Economics Empowerment because of our Reality Fair work.  On the way to Reality Fair, Laura stopped at the Red Sox opening days and thrilled to see how many from our club and seniors were there.  Also loved participating in reading day at RFk!
  • Bob enjoyed the Reality Fair and shared that on this day 1955, the soft vaccine announced thanks to Rotary.
  • Howard thanked Laura for her leadership with Reality Fair, it was his first time and loved the purpose of the event.  As a result of one of our speaker, he and Ellen joined Sages & Seekers program.  Howard sad to hear about the loss of Yarmouth police officer killed where he lived.
  • Steve happy with progress of Kenya Grant being approved by District.  June 17th there will be fundraiser in Worcester to start raising operating funds.
  • Rich thanked Laura for the Reality Fair – it is his favorite time!
  • Thank for RYLA 2016 experience
  • Rita, executive member at Stow COA, great time had by all at Red Sox game, got a new puppy & looking forward to working with Nanci on trees in Lancaster
Speaker – Darlene Corbett, therapist, success coach & author
Shared story about a client in the 90’s who adopted a little girl who had been severally abused resulting in a diagnosis of “mild retardation” and dwarfism.  The mother did not give up!  The child got every service available & was treated with love and positive messaging.  Several months later, prognosis improved.
Positive messaging and positive attitude: range of people who feel ‘stuck’ (some realize it, others don’t, and some don’t think they can get out of it) and can affect relationships and professionally.

Gallop poll showed dissatisfaction in American workforce.  Some tried expensive lunches, ping pong tables, which didn’t improve.  What did show increase in productivity was a change in environment of management & office culture.  People skills important in management, not just expertise in their craft.  Behavior & habits are important skills.  There is a science behind it …

Neuroplasticity: belief that brain is malleable.  For many years, there was a belief that ability to map & change ended after childhood.  In the 1960s, that changed.
Healing the Brain is a book that talks about mental reversal (hypnosis).  Idea is if you visualize and script, over & over, you can change a habit and augment something to be better.  This helps for athletes and also in corporate America.  Test scores can go up, golf game can improve; by practicing mental exercises over & over is a powerful tool.

Mental Chess: a man in solitary confinement knew he brain would atrophied and practiced this.  After being released, he was challenged to a chess game with a professional and was the only one who beat the champion.

Behavior is difficult because habit starts in the conscious, learning to ride a bike is awkward at first, then becomes an unconscious habit.  Replacing messaging is
Psycho-therapy is a soft science, you don’t always know how it is going to go.  Example of a 14 year old boy who was being bullied and about to go to boarding school.  He was unresponsive to all questions, so Darlene just talked!  The more she talked, the more he glared, although she thought it was listening.  After 6-7 sessions, his parents asked to talk with Darlene who was worried things weren’t improving.  They thanked her – he started making changes and feeling better; that he was listening!
Butterfly Affect: our ability to influence through small movements that do not have an impact until later.

Doesn’t matter how old you are, we can all work through fears, and be the best version of ourselves

Remember, we all have:
Strength
Tenacity
Uniqueness
Creativity
