Sanjay Deshpande spoke about Liver Health Awareness.

Sanjay did the drawing for the Bose aviation head phones from Wings & Wheels. We had 8 tickets! Congratulations to Chris Spear.

Hepatitis C is the most serious liver disease.  The Wachusett Area Rotary Club received a district grant this Rotary year to increase awareness of the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV).  If you were born between 1945 and 1965, you should be screened. This is because blood for blood transfusions and organ transplants were not screened before 1992.  People who received a clotting factor before 1987 or hemodialysis are also at risk. Other risks include work-related risk, babies born to HCV-infected mothers, or life-style choices such as unprotected sex with multiple partners, tattoos, and body piercings.  You can only contract Hepatitis C through blood to blood contact. There is no vaccine, so prevention is key.  Screening is important. There is a 90% success rate for treatment, but it takes 12-24 weeks and is expensive. There will be a Wachusett Area Club screening event in the spring 2015 timeframe in Worcester County as part of a healthcare event. If you gave blood after 1992, you have been screened already.

Next meeting is on September 11, 5:45 p.m.–7:00 a.m. at Nancy’s Air Field Café, District Governor, Val Callahan visits our club!

The next Board meeting is on Wednesday, September 10 at 6 p.m. at Papa Gino’s in Stow.  Everyone is welcome to attend!
