Hepatitis C is the most serious liver disease.  The Wachusett Area Rotary Club received a district grant this Rotary year to increase awareness of the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV).  If you were born between 1945 and 1965, you should be screened. This is because blood for blood transfusions and organ transplants were not screened before 1992.  People who received a clotting factor before 1987 or hemodialysis are also at risk. Other risks include work-related risk, babies born to HCV-infected mothers, or life-style choices such as unprotected sex with multiple partners, tattoos, and body piercings.  You can only contract Hepatitis C through blood to blood contact. There is no vaccine, so prevention is key.  Screening is important. There is a 90% success rate for treatment, but it takes 12-24 weeks and is expensive. There will be a Wachusett Area Club screening event in the spring 2015 timeframe in Worcester County as part of a healthcare event. If you gave blood after 1992, you have been screened already.

Newsletter:
Richard emailed a newsletter to club members.  It is experimental and may be sent to us bi-monthly.  It highlights club and district announcements.  Contact Richard to include information in upcoming newsletters. 

Visioning Event:
The visioning event is scheduled for September 25 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Emma’s Café.  Each member has been assigned a buddy to help each other get to the visioning event.  Nanci announced the new location of Visioning on September 25 from 5-9 PM.  Nanci reminded everyone how important is to attend.  Please fill out the online survey you received, even if you cannot attend.

Membership:
At our September 11 meeting we will install Hobbyland and RFK Children’s Action Corps as new corporate members.  This is also the meeting that DG Val Callahan will attend, so we should have a good turnout of members (evening meeting at Nancy’s Airfield Café).  

Local projects:

  • Spirit of Hudson: Nanci presented a check for $19K to Richard for our club’s share of the Spirit of Hudson. 1802 people attended the event!
  • Women in Rotary 25th anniversary bash is postponed to the fall: Contact Nancy for more information.
  • The next Bolton Repair Café will be on October 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Davis Hall at the First Parish of Bolton Church, which is located at 673 Main Street in Bolton.  We specialize in mendable clothing, lamps, small appliances, bikes, toys, and dull blades.  Enjoy a free drink and a snack.  Have fun and work with a volunteer to repair your broken item.  (If your item needs a part, it will save time if you bring the new part with you.)  Sign up as a volunteer or bring items to be repaired!  For more information, contact Ray.
  • Purple Pinkie Day is targeted for October 24, working with the schools in the Nashoba Regional School District again. The superintendent has approved this project again. Contact Chris for more information.
  • Healthcare Fair will be in November at NRHS!  It will be a Reality Fair with healthcare providers in attendance.  Contact Jim for more info.
  • Medium and small Rotarian at Work T-shirts are now available for $5.  Contact Laura.
  • The RFK Children’s Action Corp grant is proceeding. This is a local district grant.  Contact Mary Ann for more information.
     

International projects:

  • The We Are One project is wrapping up.  Richard has 50 boxes of supplies plus dental chairs and other items. He plans to put everything into one container with a very detailed, itemized list to reduce shipping costs.
  • The Worcester Polytechnic Institute Rotaract water project is moving forward.  Contact Richard for more information.

 

Rotary announcements:

  • The District Membership Forum is September 18.  It is a good opportunity for new members.  See the newsletter and district website for more information.
  • UN Day is Saturday, November 1.  Six club members have already signed up!  Space for this event is filling up fast so register now if you are interested in going.  To register for this event sign up at www.riunday.org.  If you want to share a ride to the U.N., contact Bob.

 

Happy/Sad Fines:

  • Jim is happy because he is back to good health
  • Laura is happy for attending the Nome and Anchorage Rotary meetings, that Wings & Wheels is done for this season, and that she is going to the Cape this weekend for a sorority reunion.
  • Nanci is happy to be looking at fun things to do and that the Spirit of Hudson is over.
  • Maryanne is happy to be here.
  • Carol is happy and sad that she has a new member that she is sponsoring joining next week but she won’t be here.
  • Ron is happy that school started.
  • Richard is happy to be here and that Richard is back from Philadelphia.
  • Bob is happy that he had a kidney stone that was relatively pleasant.
  • Chris is happy that he attended a Rotary meeting in Austin, TX.
  • Richard is happy that his daughter has moved… into apartment number11 and that Jim is back to good health.
  • Carol proposed that we track the locations of all of the make-up meetings!
